My computer gave up the ghost last night. I suspect it's just the power supply... I want an excuse to buy a new computer, but then again, I'd also like to avoid having to spend the money. Maybe I can find an old ATX power supply somewhere and extend the life of my poor old Pentium 533 for another few months.

What all do you user your computer for? I'm looking at Dell's website, and they have some pretty decent computers for sub-$400: Dimension B110. (The lowest-priced one would need a memory upgrade, but still.)

A $350 would do the job. Most of the time, I just want to browse the web and check Email. Now and then I want to play Warcraft III.

But in the past, I remember cheap computers having problems because the components were nonstandard in some way. The processor chocked or got hot, or the motherboard was some off-brand, or something. I know it's all Dell, so it would probably be fine, but I am still inclined to go for middle-of-the-road performance, to get the most common, standard components possible. That would probably cost around $800, but I would have more confidence that the computer would work well.

Just a power supply?

A little birdy told me that there are a couple of craptastically old computers that were just put into storage in the MSL, right near the TV. The same little birdy said that they had been sitting in the corner of some office across the hall, and are of completely unknown origin, predating the common era of graduate students. I'm sure the little birdy wouldn't mind if you grabbed a power supply from one of those.

I'm reasonably sure I've got a spare ATX PS in my basement. I'm in town this week to clean up the house and get it ready to sell, will check.
